You can use baking soda instead.Im making a cake. in the recipe it says add1 tspn bakng powder but we have none. how do i compensate for this?
I don't know how you can eliminate a leavening agent all together. That sounds like it will give you a very flat and boring product. Also, it could keep the cake from fully baking. Basically, it's not worth it to go through all that and be disappointed.

For every teaspoon of baking powder use this:

1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar plus 1/4 teaspoon cornstarch

Hope this helps. If this is an important cake you may want to find yourself a 24 hour joint to pick some up.
For each 1 teaspoon baking powder called for in a recipe, use:

1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar;

OR

1/4 teaspoon baking soda plus 1/2 cup buttermilk, sour cream or yogurt (to replace 1/2 cup liquid called for in recipe).
';1/4 tsp. baking soda + 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar';
i think baking powder is necessary. so you have to go out and buy the baking powder and then use it for th cake
I've gone without it and been fine, but yeah baking soda can help
